Inside the Grid: Tour of a Transmission Control Center
Richard Doying, vice president of operations for the Midwest Independent System Operator, gives energy NOW! correspondent Lee Patrick Sullivan a tour of MISO's control center. The center's various displays give operators critical information about the flow of electricity through the Midwest region and its various utilities. Workers can monitor the transmission lines that connect the utilities, the power load throughout the day. and the variability of the wind, which can generate up to 10 percent of the region's electricity. Doying discusses the challenges of managing wind power in the grid, as well as those of implementing a "smart grid."
