The U.S. Interior Department is poised to propose new regulations for shale-gas production on federal lands.

Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes said today that the agency is preparing a proposal for rules governing hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The drilling technique involves injecting high volumes of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to break up shale rock formations that contain natural gas.

Hayes told Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s advisory board on shale gas development that the proposed rules would require companies drilling on federal lands...

Beacon Power, an energy storage company that received a $43 million Department of Energy loan guarantee last year, has filed for bankruptcy.

The move by the Tyngsboro, MA, based company has drawn additional criticism of the DOE loan guarantee program, which is already under heavy scrutiny for its $535 million loan guarantee to failed solar panel maker Solyndra. “This latest failure is a sharp reminder that DOE has fallen well short of delivering the stimulus jobs that were promised, and now taxpayers find themselves millions of more dollars in the hole,” said Rep....

Environmental groups are asking the State Department’s inspector general to investigate the department’s review of the Keystone XL pipeline, alleging that officals are abusing their authority and conducting a biased review of the project.

The proposed 1,700-mile pipeline would carry crude from Canada's oil sands region to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Opponents say oil-sands production is carbon and water-intensive, and that there is a danger of spills from the pipeline. However, a State Department...

Most of the testimony and debate at a hearing on the future of nuclear waste storage in the United States focused on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, which the Obama administration says should not be built.

The federal government planned for 30 years to use the site in Nevada, about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, as the nation’s permanent nuclear storage site, collecting more than $30 billion from electric ratepayers and spending about $15 billion in federal money in the process. However, the Obama administration has not sought further funding for...
